Sugarcane: Sustainable Raw Material and Production
Disposable tableware made from sugarcane is produced from by-products of the sugar industry; the raw material for our sugarcane products is bagasse. Typically, sugarcane stalks are treated as waste or burned after juice extraction. In the production of our disposable tableware, these stalks are cut and ground into pulp. This pulp is pressed with water into the desired shapes, such as plates, soup bowls, and menu containers. The tableware is 100% compostable after use, returning nutrients to the soil for new crops. Sugarcane, like bamboo, is a fast-growing grass, making it a highly sustainable raw material.
Products made from sugarcane are very sturdy due to the high cellulose and fiber content of the raw material. The material is heat, oil, moisture, and freezer resistant, making it a versatile product. The products can even be heated in the oven up to 200 °C and in the microwave up to 750 watts. In addition to heat resistance, sugarcane disposables are also grease and moisture resistant, making them suitable for any hot or cold dish. Since our sugarcane range is made from a natural renewable resource, it is 100% compostable and certified according to EN-13432.
End of Life - Sugarcane
These products can be recycled with paper, provided they are dry and clean. The product and food waste can be composted if contaminated with food. Depending on the composting conditions, bagasse products will biodegrade within a few weeks to 2 months. Many sugarcane products have even passed the OK Compost HOME certification, meaning they will decompose quickly, even in your garden compost heap.
